Here's what our editor of Stitch, Sally Saunders, says:

Sally SaundersHave you already been caught up in the festive frenzy that tends to strike at this time of year? Don't worry, we've got the perfect antidote to Christmas craziness with some lovely seasonal stitching. Yes, why not take a break from all that wrapping of presents and peeling of sprouts and instead indulge in a little bit of embroidery therapy to keep you feeling full of Christmas spirit.

This month we're celebrating the fact that this is a wonderful time to spend with family and friends by making this our family issue. We've got a couple of adorable animal family projects to make plus a glorious heirloom-worthy family tree quilt and a truly stunning machine embroidery design featuring elegant figures. This project looks amazing sewn as is, or you could even tweak the design to make it look more like your family group or create personalised designs for loved ones: they'd make an amazine gift on Christmas morning and be loved all year round. And because we just couldn't resist it, we've also got some last-minute sewing ahead of the big day, or even make a head start for next year!

One of my favourite projects this month is our family of Funny Bunnies on page 22. The original design and instructions are for a charming piece of nursery art, but we've also given you details of how to create a version of this project with the help of any children you're spending time with. We've taken out a few tricksy bits and added in a lot of paint splodging, so that you'll both enjoy it - and maybe even inspire your little helper to become a stitcher in their own right. I created the project with my two little boys and we had a great time, so turn to page 25 to see the results!

I think it's important to pass on our passion to the next generation, whether that's getting children involved i n sewing from an early age or inspiring adults to take up the needle and thread for the first time. That's why we are trying to feature a wide variety of ideas, from complicated, advanced designs, to projects that a beginner can master so that we can pass on the joy of sewing to the next generation. There's nothing better than sharing your passion and seeing the love we have for stitching grow in others. If you're making a new year's resolution why not make it to inspire someone to start sewing this year? That's got to be better than giving up the usual guilty pleasures - and means you've got someone else to talk stitching to!

Sally Saunders, Editor

Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!
