Stitch 117 February/March 2019Hello...

We're thrilled to see the days getting longer, hear the dawn chorus of excited birds and feel the sun attempt to shine again! Spring is nearly here and have we got a bright and bountiful issue of Stitch for you! Your theme for this edition is the human form which has proved so exciting to explore in stitch. To start, you can try creating a stunning free-motion beach scene, with silhouetted human forms playing in the sand. There's some marvellous mixed media in here too, with a stitched collage portrait tutorial that you can tailor to stitch your own loved ones. We're showing you how to create realistic hair using a few threads and basic stitches, as well as showcasing how simple black backstitch, with a splash of colour, can create highly intricate human muscle patterns. If you're feeling up to the challenge (made easy of course with our detailed step-by-step images and instructions) you can test your traditional technique prowess with a calavera (also known as a sugar skull) design that delicately intertwines goldwork, stumpwork and silk shading. There is also a delightful dancer's form to recreate using ribbonwork and an in-depth embroidered study of the human brain. Finally you can treat yourself to more traditional techniques with an Art Nouveau-style whitework side-profile design.

Happy Stitching!
