A Guide to the Embroiderers' Guild Online Courses

Inspired to Create Embroidery CoursesDo you ever ask yourself, “How do I…?”, “How can I…?”, or “Where can I...?”

Whether you are inspired by the world of embroidery and textile design but simply don’t have the knowledge to take your interest further, or whether you have just a little knowledge of embroidery but don’t have the confidence to have a go on your own, then these courses could have been written especially for you.

Perhaps you enjoy stitching but would like to create something unique, something individual that reflects your interests or personality. Or maybe you have an idea that you would like to develop into a piece of textile art, but don’t know where to start. These courses are suitable for beginners who are intrigued by the intricacies of embroidery and would like to explore their own creative potential. They are
perfect for those who want to enhance their skills through a structured, yet relaxed, course of learning, and for those with an interest in making unique craft items, inspired by their own design work.

This series of Inspired to Create Embroidery courses has been designed specifically for The Embroiderers’ Guild and is aimed at the total beginner, but they are also perfect for those who would like to get back to basics and refresh their skills. Each course is delivered in bite-size sessions with the emphasis on exploration, the development of ideas and practical responses which make this is very much a hands-on experience. Broken down into short, step-by-step Sessions they are delivered in a methodical, image-led manner.

As you progress through the basics you are supported by a comprehensive set of instructions and close-up photography for clarity. There are printable templates and hints and tips at various stages throughout. This is supported by further inspirational images and samples to encourage experimentation and to inspire individuality, with the intention of enabling you to become an independent and confident practitioner. For all on-line subscribers, a series of Bonus Reels videos supplements each of the full-length courses.

The courses are not governed by the constraints of traditional awarding bodies or set weekly programmes, so giving you the freedom to cherry-pick or explore a technique or topic as far as you want to take it. The only limitations, therefore, are your own enthusiasm and the purely optional deadline date. (This is only required for those who would like recognition of completion of a course, whereby a certificate would be issued upon submission of all the required evidence).

One of our recent students commented after she had completed her course - a glowing report!

I have really enjoyed every aspect of the course. It suits my way of learning. The course notes are very clear and concise and organised so well. The checklist for work completed is a great help to show what you have done and what comes next. The instructions for the stitches are easy to follow and each session is a complete package in itself.

Before starting the course, I had no confidence in using mixed media and the idea of using it was daunting but from the beginning the work on exploring line led me into a gentle way of making marks without the use of just a pencil and I particularly enjoyed using sponges, corks and cotton reels etc and playing music.

I had no real understanding of colour, shades and tones and had never experimented with paint and mixing before the course. In fact the experimental work was an eye opener. At first I thought what has all this to do with fabric and threads but I soon got into it and got a lot from it. I enjoyed the freedom of trying things out without any pressure.

Before this course, I would never have thought it possible to have fun and play with mixed media as a prelude to a project. Let alone design my own work. Since starting this course I have had the confidence to join a creative textile group led by a most inspiring tutor and have developed confidence in my own ability to experiment and use a part of my brain that has been dormant for most of my life.

This is the first time I have done a distance learning course and I must say that it has been an inspiration. I looked forward to the feedback after each session and couldn’t wait to get started on the next section of work. I know that I have a lot more to learn but am happy with the way I have made progress throughout the course. I have really enjoyed the process and want to continue to develop my skills and confidence so will be looking to enrol on the next level.

I would like to thank the Embroiderers' Guild for setting up this course. It is a pleasure to work at my own pace at home especially as the City & Guilds ourses are a fair distance away. I would also like to thank Gillian for all her helpful and prompt feedback. With her praise and constructive comments she has kept up my motivation and made me strive to ‘Move on’ in creative hand embroidery.
