Moving On courses need a time commitment of 30+ hours at your own speed and cost £280 (£240 for members of the Embroiderers' Guild) during 2017

Another Dimension courses need 45+ hours and cost £420 \£380 for members of the Embroiderers' Guild) during 2017

Course 1 Moving On - Hand Stitch

work by Marie KhanThe course is suitable for beginners who are intrigued by the intricacies of embroidery and would like to explore their creative potential and for those who want to enhance their skills through a structured but relaxed course of learning.

Exploring Line

  • Mark making, folding, cutting, monoprinting and interpreting line into stitch
  • Back, stem, chain, fern, whipped stem, Pekinese and raised chain band stitches

Exploring Colour

  • Primary, secondary and mixing colours, tints and shades
  • Straight, fly, detached chain and cross stitch

Exploring Texture

  • Rubbings, weaving, high and low relief textures
  • French knot, bullion knot, fabric layering and needle weaving

Course 2 Moving On - Machine Stitch

Colour Wheel by Hazel WilsonAs in course 1 the main purpose of the course is to enable the student from beginner to experienced to take an exciting journey of discovery through sampling, testing, exploring materials and developing new techniques and a personal style.

Exploring Line

  • Mark making, folding, cutting, monoprinting and interpreting line into stitch
  • Setting up the machine, starting to stitch straight and curved lines, straight and zigzag stitch
  • Twin needle work
  • Cords and couching

Exploring Colour

  • Primary, secondary and mixing colours, tints and shades
  • Applique methods
  • Strip piecing

Exploring Texture

  • Rubbings, weaving, high and low relief textures
  • Types of quilting
  • Faux chenille fabric, pleating and weaving

Course 3 Another Dimension - Hand Stitch

Canvaswork by Aine FennerAs a natural progression from the first course you will be introduced to two more elements of design, - shape and form. The course also covers translucency, opacity, space, pattern and rhythm. Each session takes you another step towards becoming an independent designer and encourages you to reflect on your learning at every stage.

Exploring Line

  • String blocks
  • Shapes for pattern
  • Repeating patterns
  • Zentangles
  • Stencilling
  • Twisted chain, cable chain, herringbone and double knot stitch
  • Holbein stitch and blackwork

Exploring Colour

  • Immersion and space dyeing
  • Canvaswork
  • Opacity, translucency, colour mixing and density
  • Shadow work
  • Buttonhole stitch and bars, fishbone stitch

Exploring Shape and Form

  • Hollow and solid forms
  • English, channel and trapunto quilting
  • Bend, curl, fold and pleat shapes
  • Twisted cords, braids, couching
  • Eyelet holes
