Bobby Britnell

Bobby has a background in tailoring and in making theatrical costumes for such shows as the Black and White Minstrels, Talk of the Town, and several West End musicals. She later qualified as a teacher and ran the textile department in a large comprehensive school in Guildford. During her full time teaching she also completed her City & Guilds in Embroidery. She taught City & Guilds courses for 12 years at Westhope College including Design, Drawing and Mixed Media, Stitched Textiles: FlowersTextiles Decoration Techniques Diploma Level in a number of craft subjects. She was a tutor on the BA (Hons) Embroidered Textiles Courses for the Julia Caprara School of Textile Arts. She now works as a freelance textile artist, teaching and exhibiting both in the UK and abroad and also runs successful courses from her home in Shropshire. Her studio attracts the best teachers in the country with students coming from all over the world.

Bobby's book "Stitched Textiles: Flowers" is a creative journey from initial inspiration through to finished pieces, visiting design development and the materials and methods along the way. Techniques explored include dyeing, monoprinting, block printing, appliqué, foiling, photo-transfer printing, piecing and stitching. Five step-by-step projects build on the skills learnt in the preceding sections and include wall hangings, a pretty needlecase, a pincushion and a cushion cover. The book is aimed at both the beginner and practising textile artists and will inspire and encourage new ideas and experimentation.

Hands Up for UgandaBobby is also committed to working with the charity she set up with her husband, Martin, "Hands up for Uganda". The charity was created with the overriding aim of empowering the people of Kissabwa, by creating projects to initiate a self-supporting and sustainable future - a model farm, development of their traditional local crafts plus education, vocational courses and apprenticeships, water and lighting, healthcare.

She is a member of the Textile Study Group - a high profile national exhibiting and teaching group and is a member of the exhibiting group "Through our Hands". She has worked in private collections in the UK including the offices of KPMG, in the USA, Canada, Austria, Germany and Portugal. Her work regularly appears in publications and books.
