Embroidery Across the Pond: The Embroiderers’ Guild of America

by Dr. Cheryl Christian

USA eagle.jpgMore than fifty years ago, three women made a dream a reality. They keenly felt the need for an organization that promoted needlework in all of its various forms. Today, if you walk into a meeting, no matter which of the more than three hundred chapters of The Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA), you’ll be made to feel welcome as you share the love of needlework, and perhaps a bite of chocolate.

Chapter members may be creating surface embroidery, studying stumpwork, comparing canvaswork, discussing outreach projects, planning the next retreat, or preparing to mount an exhibition. Whatever they may be doing, they embody the mission of EGA: to stimulate appreciation for and celebrate the heritage of embroidery by advancing by the highest standards of excellence in its practice through education, exhibition, preservation, collection, and research.
