South West Region Announces the Museum Discoveries Competition Winners at Craft4Crafters Show

Julie Stenning, Regional Chair of the South West Region of the Embroiderers' Guild says:

"I am pleased to announce, that following a public vote at Craft4Crafters last week, Janet Aygun from the Jersey Branch won the Museum Discoveries Competition. Her entry was named "Beetle Collection" and it was inspired by the Natural History Museum in Oxford. Janet wins a cash prize and will the first name on our Regional Competition Shield. Both have kindly been donated by Craft4Crafters.

Second place was Nanette Stevens from Frome and District. Nanette's entry was named "Sunrise at Stonehenge" and was inspired by the Stonehenge and Salisbury Museums. Nanette wins a cash prize.

Third place was Laura Horner from Exeter and District branch. Her entry was named "The Unst Vikings!" and was inspired by The Skidbladner Viking Longship Museum, Unst, Shetlands. Laura has also won a cash prize.

We had 31 entries altogether. I would like to thank all of you who took part. It gave us a very good talking point with our visitors and we were able to show that our members use a great variety of techniques and also have different skill levels. We hope that we will gain several new members as a result of the show and most of those will be because we were able to talk to our visitors about the competition entries. I have yet to ascertain how many votes there were altogether but luckily, Craft4Crafters staff count them for us! Even if you didn't win, I hope those of you who entered this year and also those of you who were not able to, will consider joining in next year's competition. Without those entries, out stand would have been very sad and sorry! The committee is in the process of deciding the next theme.

Congratulations to Janet, Nanette and Laura."

Eastern Region Branches of the Embroiderers' Guild and a Guinness World Record

Making puffs Stringing the Puffs
Making Suffolk Puffs Stringing Puffs together

In conjunction with the Museum of East Anglian Life and four branches from the Eastern Region - Suffolk East, Suffolk West, Colne & Colchester, and Waveney - an exhibition was held at the museum in Stowmarket. Running alongside all summer was a project for a Giant Caterpillar made from Suffolk Puffs, organised by Sue Cranwell, Madelaine Nightingale and Linda Elmy, hoping to make the Guiness Book of Records for the longest Suffolk Puff Caterpillar. Workshops were run during the summer schools, and the Women's Institute, craft and sewing groups as well as the branches attended.

The verification took place on Monday 23rd October and two independent witnesses counted the puffs and a professional architect measured the length. It was photographed and video recorded. The verification took place in Abbots Hall Barn and the caterpillar was three and a half lengths of the barn - 90 metres 38cm long. Counting the puffs took just under two hours and there were 864 puffs!

The branches are now awaiting the verification from the Guinness Book of Records and the caterpillar will be on display at the museum next season.
