Worcester Branch - "Changing Perspectives" - a Textile Art Installation at Croome National Trust (EG Branch Event):
05-Jul-2019 to 31-Dec-2019

About the Event: The idea of ‘change’ to the grounds was the starting point for the members of Worcester Embroiderers’ Guild’s installation. We looked at the social and political events that have left their mark on Croome Park. Resulting ideas ranged from the disappearing village, the creation of the lake and gardens, life during WW2, St. Joseph’s School for Boys, the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and, most recently, the arrival of the National Trust and its plans for taking the estate forward.

Working in their own style and mostly in collaborative groups, the members have tried to depict aspects of these important moments through textile art work. For some, their medium has been felt, others have applied fabrics which, in some cases, have been naturally dyed, creating pattern and foliage found in the landscape. In all cases, the inspiration was to depict a Changing Perspective on a room setting – creating all the fixtures and fittings from textiles.

Vintage fabrics have been integrated and recycled and, through using materials that are not usually associated with embroidery, the visitors should see a tactile response in 3D with this installation. The designs have a common link of hand and machine stitch, enhancing the work with threads used in a variety of ways to make statements ranging from the bold to the finely-detailed.

A different view on the theme of ‘change’ has arisen with the Branch being fortunate to work with Antony Bridge who is Croome’s Artist in Residence.

Everything Has Its Own Time: Nikki Parmenter (EG Member Organised Event):
05-Oct-2019 to 22-Dec-2019

About the Event: Nikki Parmenter is a Cheshire-based artist and member of the Embroiderers' Guild who specialises in mixed media, textile based pieces. She takes inspiration from a variety of sources and is particularly interested in how ancient societies created visual symbols to represent the things which were important to them. She investigates myths and legends and draws parallels between societies showing that although many people have different beliefs, we are all united by visual iconography.

Much of this particular body of work is inspired directly by the Williamson’s collection of Della Robbia Pottery, using colours and decorative motifs reworked in textiles. But these are in no way copies of the pottery: that was a starting point.

Treasured Threads: Unpicking Gunnersbury's Quilts (UK Exhibition):
15-Oct-2019 to 12-Jan-2020

About the Event: This free exhibition takes an in-depth look at one of Gunnersbury Park Museum’s most remarkable items; a pieced and appliqued quilt created in around 1825 by a family in Acton, West London. An outstanding piece of craftwork and significant to Britain’s history of quilting, the so called ‘Acton Top’ features contemporary figures in Regency dress, Biblical scenes, animals and plants. Comparing the Acton Top with other historic quilts from the museum collection, the exhibition investigates how quilting developed from the late 1780s to the 1850s and explores associated technological and social changes. The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of talks and workshops.

Bummock: The Lace Archive (UK Exhibition):
15-Nov-2019 to 16-Jan-2020

About the Event: The Goldsmiths Textile Collection and Constance Howard Gallery are pleased to present an exhibition by artists, Lucy Renton, Danica Maier and Andrew Bracey.

The Bummock is the large part of an iceberg hidden beneath the surface of the sea. The exhibition at the Constance Howard Gallery is the result of a residency that researched unseen parts of the Lace Archive, Nottingham as catalysts for the creation of new artworks. The aim of the wider project, led by artists Danica Maier and Andrew Bracey, was to create artistic responses to unseen or undervalued parts of archives to generate new readings, knowledge and artworks.

Artists Bracey, Maier and Lucy Renton spent two and half years rummaging, exploring and making. Artworks were created as a response to the Lace Archive and will now be shown alongside objects selected by the artists from the Goldsmiths Textiles Collection in the third iteration of this touring exhibition. Their rummage of the Goldsmiths Textile Collection was directed by the parameters of their artistic practices developed during their residency at the Lace Archive.

May Morris: Art & Life (UK Exhibition):
28-Nov-2019 to 14-Mar-2020

About the Event: ‘I’m a remarkable woman – always was, though none of you seemed to think so.’ May Morris in a letter to George Bernard Shaw, 1936

Dovecot Studios brings the first-ever exhibition about the work of May Morris to Scotland. Art & Life tells the overlooked story of May Morris (1862–1938), the youngest daughter of William Morris, and her extraordinary work and contribution to the British Arts and Crafts Movement.

The exhibition repositions May Morris as a key female force in securing the legacy and international influence of the Arts and Crafts Movement and is organised by the William Morris Gallery London in association with Dovecot Studios

Dovecot Studios stage a landmark exhibition exploring the life and work of May Morris (1862–1938), the youngest daughter of William Morris (1834–96) and one the most significant artists of the British Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th century. Bringing together over 80 original textiles and drawings from collections around the UK, May Morris Art & Life will explore May's extraordinary body of work and why she deserves recognition outside her familial namesake.

Title of the event.
A sentence about the event.
Dates: opening times. Any practical information such as admission charges. A contact telephone number. Please also include a web address if available.

Entries are not restricted to Great Britain.

Workshops: we may only list workshops if you meet at least one of these criteria: you are a Guild branch or partner organisation; you are a museum or heritage centre; you advertise in one of our publications; your workshop is run on a non profit basis. Please contact us about advertising if you wish to publicise workshops/courses and don't fall into any of these categories.

Please note that as this is a free service, we are unable to guarantee that any entry will appear in Embroidery magazine or STITCH with the Embroiderers' Guild magazines. If such a guarantee is required, it is recommended that readers consider a paid advertisement.

Events for magazine publication must be received by us at least 3 months before the publication date of the issue in which they should appear. We will endeavour to list events on the web site within one month of receipt.
