About the Event: Showcasing over 100 samplers from the Fitzwilliam Museum's excellent but often unseen collection, this display highlights the importance of samplers as documentary evidence of past lives.

The display also highlights the individuality of each sampler, which in some cases is the only surviving document to record the existence of an ordinary young woman. The Wonder Quilt of Wrexham (UK Exhibition):
15-Jun-2017 to 25-Nov-2017

About the Event: The Wrexham Tailor’s Quilt is one of the iconic artefacts of St Fagans: National Museum of History. Last displayed in Wrexham at the arts and crafts exhibition during the 1933 National Eisteddfod, the quilt is returning to its home town for a special display in Gallery 1 at Wrexham County Borough Museum & Archives.
The quilt is actually a single-layer patchwork coverlet made from 4,525 pieces of coloured woollen cloth. The design includes scenes from the Bible, landmarks of 19th century Wales and motifs symbolizing the four nations of the United Kingdom and world cultures. It is one of the few surviving examples of the fashion among highly skilled tailors during the mid-19th century for producing massive yet detailed patchwork hangings and bedcovers.

The quilt which took master tailor, James Williams, ten years is thought to have made it first public appearance at the Art Treasures and Industrial Exhibition of North Wales and Border Counties in 1876. It was also displayed at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1925. The National Museum of Wales purchased the quilt from James Williams grandson, Richard Williams, in 1935 following a letter from a local solicitor who had highlighted its cultural importance to Wales as an example of folk art.

More recently it has been the star attraction in textile exhibitions at leading museums in London, Berlin and Vienna. The quilt was the centre piece of the 2014 British Folk Art exhibition at Tate Britain.

The quilt will be on show at Wrexham Museum from 12th May until 25th November 2017. Alongside the quilt will be a series of small wall quilts, inspired by James Williams masterpiece and produced by the members of the Quilters’ Guild (Region 13 – North Wales and North-West England).

The display has been curated in partnership with the textile conservators and curators of St Fagans: National Museum of History.

Peacock 8 - an exhibition at the Rowley Gallery by Selina Carr (UK Exhibition):
07-Aug-2017 to 31-Dec-2017

About the Event: I live in London, and was awarded a B/TEC diploma in art and design at Chelsea School Of Art. I went on to study Fashion and Textiles at Birmingham Polytechnic (now Birmingham City University) and it was there that I developed my speciality in embroidered textiles. I see pattern, texture, and colour wherever I go, and am drawn to anything with intricate patterns, strong colour combinations, complex forms, and unusual textures. I particularly love exotic birds, shimmering fish, and delicate butterflies. For these peacock pieces, I used layers of velvet, organza, and lamé fabric, cutting into areas of the material and embroidering over it. I also used water soluble fabric to create lacy textures and edgings. I mainly use machine embroidery, which I sometimes embellish with elements of hand stitching. I am happy to accept commissions.

Exhibition of selected pieces from the Diana Springall Collection (UK Exhibition):
05-Sep-2017 to 15-Oct-2017

About the Event: Diana Springall is one of Britain’s most well-known textile artists whose passion for textiles has led her to amass a unique and diverse collection of contemporary embroidery by graduate students, colleagues and peers. Her collection of over 200 works (spanning forty years or more) includes hand and machine embroidery, appliqué, patchwork and loop pile techniques to name a few. Each piece has been personally chosen by Diana and is often accompanied by a unique insight about the artist. With insufficient wall space to showcase her complete collection, we have selected a number of pieces that reflect the diverse range of techniques and disciplines. Central to the exhibition is one piece by Diana called ‘Cyclamen’.

You are invited to join Diana for a personal insight into this remarkable collection on Thursday 28th September at
‘The Orangery’, Squires Nursery, Shepperton
7:00 to 8:30 pm - tickets are £8 and include a glass of wine. 10% discount on bookings of 10 or more.

Armageddon and other Stories - Threads through revelations by Devon based textile artist Jacqueline Parkinson (UK Exhibition):
07-Sep-2017 to 05-Nov-2017

About the Event: Threads through Revelations took Jacqueline Parkinson, a Devon-based textile artist, three years and three months to complete - remarkable artistic achievement. The 14 panels, when placed end to end, extend 33 metres making it one of the largest embroidery works in the world done by a single artist. Made up of around 12 million stitches, the works cover a total of 55,176 square metres (not including backing fabric or stands). New textile art exhibition by Threadmill at The Silk Museum (UK Exhibition):
16-Sep-2017 to 10-Nov-2017

About the Event: This autumn, The Silk Museum will be bursting at the seams with stunning stitchwork by North West textile artists, Threadmill. Founded in 1995, Threadmill have been working tirelessly to promote stitch and textiles through displays and workshops. For this exhibition, the group has taken inspiration from the museum’s collections to create a journey through the countries of the Silk Road.

Each of the 14 members have a very distinct style, using different techniques to interpret the artefacts and express themselves. Their creations range from hand sewn to machine-stitched embroideries, with stumpwork, patchwork, knitted, crocheted, woven and needle-felted elements.

Join Threadmill members for a drop-in craft workshop on Thursday 26 October between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. Make a small fabric panel decorated with a Silk Road camel, and embellish it with colourful beads, trimmings and threads. £5 per person, no need to book. Visitors of all ages are welcome to participate.

Threadmill Group Statement:

“Threadmill was formed in 1995 by a group of like-minded artists in the North West of England. The members have a wide range of backgrounds; most have recognised vocational qualifications or degrees in Art and Design subjects and many also teach in schools and colleges. We all share an enthusiasm for creativity whilst using textiles as our principal means of artistic expression.

By working in a group we hope to provide support to the individual and therefore allow each artist to develop, by giving a focus and setting targets. We meet regularly to exchange ideas and are keen to explore new avenues. To create a group identity we work to a theme for each exhibition; this ensures that the work has a common link while allowing individuals to express themselves freely.

We are committed to the promotion of textiles as both a decorative and expressive art form and hope to increase awareness and education through our exhibitions and workshops.”

From Purbeck to Scotland - an exhibition by Kirsten T Webb (UK Exhibition):
24-Sep-2017 to 13-Oct-2017

About the Event: Nature's bounteous treasures are a source of constant inspiration for textile artist Kirsten T Webb and small wonder, for her home county of Dorset is amply blessed with a wealth of natural riches all year round.

Whether as a yardstick by which the glories of other parts of the world are measured, or simply as a delight in and of itself, the Dorset landscape looms large in From Purbeck To Scotland, Kirsten’s new exhibition – her first for three years – at the charming St Andrew’s Church in the grounds of Lulworth Castle.

Kirsten dyes her material and threads with silk paints and is passionate and resourceful in her work – anything is fair game if it serves the picture, from old cheap lace to net produce bags from the supermarket used to add texture, depth and new layers of interest.

The new exhibition features a series of landscapes from a visit to the Flow Country, in the far north of Scotland. Its peatland and wetland were quite unlike anything Danish-born Kirsten had ever encountered.

Other highlights of the exhibition include a group of small box frames with portraits of horses, ponies and cows, some intricately worked samples of work inspired by lichen and several of the Viking designs that link Kirsten’s Norse heritage with her love of nature.

Kirsten also plans to show some examples of the renowned and widely praised ecclesiastical embroidery that first drew her to the craft in the late 1980s.

The Historical Development of Chain Stitch Embroidery to Tambour Beading (Lectures/Talks):
30-Sep-2017 to 30-Sep-2017

About the Event: This talk by bead couturiers Lesley Coidan & Diana Vernon explores the luxury fashion technique of tambour beading - an embroidery technique used to embellish and enliven garments . Lesley and Diana together run Couture Beading & Embellishment Company, www.couturebeading.com. They specialise in a variety of couture embellishment techniques, but primarily tambour beading and embroidery for film, theatre and the couture. They each have over 45 years experience of designing, making and teaching, and are the authors of the book ‘The Art of Tambour Beading & Embroidery’ being published by The Guild of Master Craftsman later this year.
In 1770 Charles Germain de Saint Aubin, embroiderer to Louis XV the King of France, wrote about a new technique that used a hook instead of a needle to work embroidery. This technique was tambour. In fact the technique was much older, and is thought to have originated first from China or India. This same technique is still used today, and you will have seen many examples of it in theatre, film and couture work, and especially the Royal Wedding and Court dresses. It is the professional couture method for embroidering with beads and sequins.
This illustrated talk and demonstration will give you an introduction to the techniques of couture tambour embroidery with beads, pearls and sequins, and the historical development of the technique through to its contemporary use today.

Malcolm Lochead exhibition at Glasgow Cathedral Festival (UK Exhibition):
08-Oct-2017 to 14-Oct-2017

About the Event: 2Embroiderist" Malcolm Lochhead is showing a retrospective selection of his embroidered works both ‘sacred’ and ‘profane’ as part of the 2017 Glasgow Cathedral Festival. The exhibition will comprise some 50 works, which cover his career as a designer from 1970 to the present. The ‘sacred’ works in the exhibition will be the cover for the Tomb of Saint Mungo, which he designed in 1970 and was made by members of the local Embroiderers’ Guild. Six of the twelve embroidered chairs made for the o›ce of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland by the Edinburgh Embroiderers’ Guild will also be on show. A selection of ecclesiastical hangings made by Professor Lochhead himself has been lent for the exhibition. The ‘profane’ works have been originally made for exhibition and have been lent for the occasion by a large number of collectors. ‘Profane’ in this sense is merely the opposite of sacred – there will be nothing to frighten the horses! There will also be an audio visual presentation of works too large or complex to travel to the show. The exhibition will be open to the public on October 9 – 22. There will be performances each lunchtime and evening as part of the overall
festival. Visit www.glasgowcathedral.org/festival/ for more.

Stitch and Stone: Architects and Embroidery in the Gothic Revival Era (Lectures/Talks):
13-Oct-2017 to 13-Oct-2017

About the Event: At St. Martin's Church, Low Marple, we are striving to conserve our Arts and Crafts Movement Heritage. The William Morris firm was used in the building and furnishing of the church in 1867. We have some beautiful stoles, etc. and one of our members is currently weaving a tapestry using a cartoon from Christopher Whall. It was for a stained glass window in the Red House.

We are celebrating our 150th anniversary with an Arts and Heritage weekend, 3rd to 5th November.

However, prior to that, we have an eminent textile expert, Brenda King, from the Textile Society, coming to talk about Victorian embroidery. The talk is entitled "Stitch and Stone: Architects and Embroidery in the Gothic Revival Era." Brenda will touch on embroideries by John Dando Sedding, the architect of our church.

The talk is on Friday 13th October, at 7.30 in St. Martin's Church, Brabyns Brow, Low Marple, SK6 5DT. Our website, where information will also be displayed, is www.stmartinsheritagetrust.org.uk

About the Event: This exhibition of textiles and mixed media work has been created by the ISE textile group of thirteen artists. It is one of the first to be shown at the currently being refurbished Delapré Abbey in Northampton. Wendy Davies, Sarah Donnelly, Jude Flanagan, Sandra Jenkins, Sheila Jones, Karin Kirk, Sue Latimer, Judith Laundon, Dora Mack, Mary Martin, Jean Paling, Alison Ranson and Alyssa Robinson meet regularly in Welford, Northamptonshire. Our aim is to promote creativity with rigorous discipline, underpinned by knowledge of textiles worldwide.

16-Oct-2017 to 21-Oct-2017

About the Event: “Inspired By Landscapes” is a new exhibition from the Avalon Embroiderers Guild. The exhibition will show the work of Somerset based embroiderers, with an eclectic line up of 2D and 3D works, showcasing traditional hand stitching, including crewel or Jacobean work, blackwork, and goldwork, alongside more contemporary work using mixed media, hand-dyed fabrics, and machine embroidery. As well as individual works, on display will be several group projects, including ‘Everlasting Landscapes’ and ‘Street Scenes’, made up of individual pieces joined together to create larger scenes; and two life-size embroidered figures of King Arthur (kindly on loan from Glastonbury Abbey)
and Queen Guinevere.

In addition to the work on display - some of which will be for sale - there will be a sales table of stitched gifts, ‘inspiration packs’, and cards. It will be an exciting and vibrant exhibition, full of colour, variety and texture, guaranteed to brighten up an autumn day.

The Avalon Embroiderers Guild is a branch of the national Embroiderers Guild, which aims to build awareness of stitch and textile art, through education, encouragement, and inspiration.
