Calm During the Storm - an exhibition of Embroiderers' Guild items from WW1, WW2 (UK Exhibition):
18-Apr-2017 to 30-Jun-2017

About the Event: A poignant and timely exhibition as we mark the centenary of the outbreak of World War I that portrays the role of needlework, especially embroidery, as a calming influence in troubled times and links it to personal experience. The exhibition covers both world wars with small embroideries such as postcards, a tea cosy, handkerchiefs and artefacts such as pincushions produced by disabled servicemen.

There are also Penelope needlwork kits produced for the sole use of servicemen during World War II and other examples of work made during wartime. One contemporary piece, Comment on the Afghan War, is by Cobie Erskine with two further contemporary pieces, SOS by Fiona Rainford and A Life Worth Living by Lisa Earley.

Waisted Efforts - an exhibition at Chertsey Museum (UK Exhibition):
17-Sep-2016 to 02-Sep-2017

About the Event: A visual feast, this brand new exhibition will chart the changing styles of the waistline in fashion from the 1750s to the 1950s. Cultural, social, and aesthetic attitudes towards waistlines will be explored through men’s and women’s clothing, both outerwear and underwear. Beautiful examples of fashionable garments which both freed and constricted the waist will be on show, as well as pieces of original foundation-wear essential for achieving the correct silhouette.

Highlights include a stunning ‘sack-back’ gown from the 1770s, a man’s suit from the 1780s, examples of women’s high-waisted Regency clothing, an exquisite girl’s dress from 1850, an 1880s day gown, a flapper dress from the 1920s and lovely examples of 1950s ‘New Look’ styles. The foundation wear includes corsets from a variety of eras, an Edwardian man’s corset, a 1920s bust bodice (designed to flatten the chest) and a ‘Waspie’ corset from the 1950s.

The majority of the pieces are selected from the Olive Matthews Collection.

From Here to There - an exhibition by Bath Textile Artists (UK Exhibition):
10-Mar-2017 to 29-Apr-2017

About the Event: Bath Textile Artists will be exhibiting at the Pound Arts Centre. They are a select group of professionals who combine years of experience in the fields of embroidery, felting, quilting, costume, weaving, dyeing and stitching. Their aim is to expand the boundaries of textile techniques into the realms of fabric art. The strength of the group is its variety of styles and sparkling creativity.

Inspiration for members comes from the response to nature and landscape, a zest for travel, myth and architecture; and works are often wrought with a wisp of humour. Jewel-like embroideries and costume adornment, pictures and wearables, banners and hangings all make a group exhibition a colourful and textural treat.

Invitations for public and private commissions have provided the impetus for some very fine work locally and nationally. Members of the group are happy sharing their expertise through leading workshops and lectures; several teach at schools and colleges in the Southwest.
