Our Patron HRH The Duchess of Gloucester GCVO

HRH_The_Duchess_of_Gloucester.jpgRoyal Patronage was established in 1924 when HM Queen Mary became the Guild's first Royal Patron. Following the death of HRH the Princess Alice in October 2004, HRH the Duchess of Gloucester graciously became the Guild's Royal Patron in 2005.

The Duchess of Gloucester, formerly Birgitte Eva van Deurs Henriksen, was born on 20 June 1946 in Odense, Denmark. She married The Duke of Gloucester (then Prince Richard) in 1972. As a working Member of the Royal Family, Her Royal Highness carries out many public engagements on behalf of her patronages and organisations and in support of Her Majesty The Queen.

The Duchess has visited the Guild Head Quarters a number of times since becoming Patron.

  • The first visit was July 2006 when the Duchess took a great interest in the Guild's Collection.
  • In 2006 The Duchess also visited the Art of the Stitch and Scholar exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol
  • In 2010 The Duchess made an informal visit to meet past Chairman of the Guild. Anthea Godfrey and the then President, Charles Gotto.
  • In September 2011 we were delighted that she kindly agreed to officially open Embroiderers’ Guild House, the Guild’s new home after leaving Hampton Court Palace.
  • In February 2013 the Duchess made an informal visit to Embroiderers' Guild House to see the postcard exhibition.
  • In September 2015 the Duchess visited the Cotswold Branch of the Embroiderers' Guild to mark the 50th anniversary of the Branch. (Please click here to visit the Branch News page which gives the full story of the visit and more pictures)
