Downloadable Patterns: The V&A Coif

A Historical Whodunnit

(From ‘Embroidery Magazine‘ July/August 2023)

When Toni Buckby – artist, needleworker and PhD researcher at Sheffield Hallam University and the Victoria and Albert Museum – put out a notice through the Embroiderers’ Guild and online asking for 40 experienced embroiderers to contribute to a blackwork stitching project … she ended up with having to expand the project to 140 stitchers …

They have been asked to stitch a historic pattern from a coif, a head covering worn by men, women, and children from roughly the middle ages to the early 17th century.

The finished pieces will be on display in an exhibition at the Museum in December 2023, and then will be donated to the V&A collection.

While the number involved in the project itself has been finalised, Toni has agreed to let us share the pattern so that others can explore their own interpretation of this fascinating piece.

This pattern can be downloaded for personal use only. It should not be further distributed, reproduced or sold on in any way.
