Louise Saxton at work

Reclaiming and re-imagining discarded needlework

Featuring in the Sept/Oct issue of Embroidery magazine Louise Saxton aka The Embroidery Vandal is an Australian artist and has one of the most enviable needlework stashes, which she cuts and pins to create striking new compositions. Her practice engages primarily with the reconstruction of domestic needlework, which she regards as a “silent collaboration with the anonymous original makers.”

Her latest book Louise Saxton cut & pinned is a self-published monograph reflecting the artist’s two decades collecting, reclaiming and re-imagining discarded needlework. Embroidery and lace made in past eras by past makers is on the brink of extinction and so too are many of the plants and animals that inspired their creation. Louise Saxton’s reclamation project profiled in exquisite full colour detail in this publication addresses these dual vulnerabilities. The artist’s textile oeuvre and this book pay homage to the original makers and gives new voice to their lives and labours through her beautiful creations.

“Louise Saxton’s reclaimed textile works re-value, to an unquestionable position of creative authority and aesthetic importance, those women makers whose handwork is historically dismissed as ‘not-art’.”

— Jason Smith, Director & CEO Geelong Gallery
