Getting to know more about Jeannie Rose Malcolm – Guild Graduate in 2024

2024 Guild graduate Jeannie Rose Malcolm from Falmouth University has merged a passion for storytelling with her textile design by creating a collection inspired by classic children’s book The Secret Garden, but with a twist. Imagining the book as an adaptation by director Wes Anderson, Jeannie was influenced by the director’s signature bold colour palette and the books whimsical narrative. The result, a range of digital and hand embroidered floral samples to be visualised adorning the fabric of this imaginative world.

I specialise in mixed media embroidered textiles, where my particular passion lies in merging digital and hand embroidery processes. My work is deeply influenced by archives and historic locations I visit, which serve as a rich source of inspiration for my illustrative repeat pattern work and motifs.

For her final collection, she merged her passion for storytelling with textile design. Inspired by the idea of envisioning what the textiles might look like if Wes Anderson directed an adaptation of the classic children’s book The Secret Garden, she crafted a fictional brief that guided her creative process. Anderson’s bold colour palette and the book’s whimsical narrative shaped her vision, allowing her to explore how storytelling can influence design.

Imagining the manor’s interior in this fictional film, she used a range of digital and hand embroidery techniques to create floral textile samples that she believed would adorn the fabric of this imaginative world.
