Getting to know more about Bonnie Magee – Guild Graduate in 2024
The practice of 2024 Guild graduate Bonnie Magee is driven by materiality, processes and ‘the feminine’. Upon discovering a fascination for preserved body parts and the imagery of dark fairy tales Bonnie’s collection whilst studying at Glasgow School of Art saw a shift to a darker side with “Feminine Grotesque”. Exploring the beauty and discomfort of taxidermy alongside the art of storytelling and animal symbolism Bonnie created both textural and illustrative samples focussed on birds. Stitch using a domestic sewing machine enhances a mixed-media approach to embroidery, Bonnie explores collaging, layering materials and pushing the boundaries of traditional techniques to highlight the beauty arising from the uncomfortable.
During the development of my collection ‘The Feminine Grotesque, my interests shifted towards darker themes. I discovered a fascination for preserved body parts. I captured the textural qualities of organ tissues through fabric manipulation techniques that have captivated me in the past. My creations highlight the beauty that arises from the uncomfortable, merging elements of the body and the natural world.
The collection has a refined monochromatic black and white colour palette, parred back to emphasise tonal values, along with contrasting qualities and finish of fabric and thread. This modern collection becomes timeless and classic, designed to have a lasting appeal
Continuing my exploration of ‘The Feminine Grotesque,’ I became intrigued by the imagery found in dark fairy tales. Inspired by artists like Louise Bourgeois and Paula Rego, I was drawn to emotive art through storytelling and animal symbolism. During my museum visits, I was able to observe and appreciate both the discomfort and beauty in taxidermy.
